Foundations of Experiential Learning

Foundations of Experiential Learning is a week-long intensive and immersive course designed to prepare, encourage, and inspire teachers to take on the challenge of taking their students outside of the traditional classroom. By participating in a range of experiential learning activities, teachers will gain the confidence and competence to design relevant and meaningful lessons that engage their students in the various communities of which they are a part.

We will take on a variety of topics, ranging from the philosophy of experiential education to the practicalities of risk management and supervision, and from social-emotional learning to designing rigorous academic coursework. This course is highly adaptable to the needs of the educator, with focus being guided by the teacher's vision for their individual classroom.

Expeditions - Connecticut River Paddle

Expeditions provide professional development experiences for educators that aim to inspire and empower educators to undertake off-campus learning experiences with their students. In these courses, educators will be engaging in a range of expeditions - camping, canoeing, and backpacking - that will expose them to the energy and excitement of “expedition life”, while also preparing them for the realities of taking these types of trips with their students.

Outside of the limiting confines of the school, students broaden their horizons in order to gain perspective on who they are.  They create lasting memories, establish close bonds with peers, and overcome hardships previously believed to be impossible.  Expeditions help us to create new stories and give us the opportunity to see ourselves in a different light. Ultimately, they help to lay the foundation for us to tell a different story about who we are and what we have to offer to the communities of which we are a part.
